Theresa Abramovich
Grand Pop's "Belle of Ploesti"

The Belle of Ploesti

Grand Pop sent the following letter after our daughter, Theresa, was born December 2, 1966. We did not know that her great-great-grandmother's name was Theresa. (Grand Pop wrote the letter on January 5, 1967 but inadvertently dated the letter Jan 5, 1957)
Dear Carol and Bruce and Baby make 3

My very best wishes and congratulations on the safe and jubilant arrival of Baby Therese. It was also my mother's name. What beautiful nostalgic memories the name awakens in me. In addition to her beautiful character, she was also known as the Belle of Ploesti. You remember Ploesti from the history of the 2d World War which was bombed by the American Air Force to rubble in the fall of 1943. And I am not fibbing about mother being the Belle of Ploesti. She also wore the best of dresses. I still remember her beautiful large hat, adorned with large white ostrich plumes. I must have been then about 9 years old. (Or were they just birds?)

When we left Ploesti, the oil wells were about 20 miles to the north on the foothills of the Carpathian mountains. I remember a creek on the outskirts of Ploesti running a multicolored liquid half oil and 1/2 water. Could have bot an acre for $10.00. That was 40 years before Hitler.

Wish you 3 and all you love good health and good humor. The rest will take care of itself automatically. Send me a picture, no matter the size.
